Independence, MO —

Chosen from among Mules, Maulers, Pioneers, Outlaws and others, the Missouri Mavericks won out as the team name for the city’s new Central Hockey League professional hockey team.

At a press conference today inside the WhistleStop room at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, representatives of Independence Pro Hockey LLC are unveiling the moniker after choosing among 10 finalists from a fan-powered name-that-team-contest sponsored by The Examiner.

Jim Collings of Platte City was announced as the grand prize winner of the naming contest, earning a $2,000 shopping spree at the Independence Center. The other finalists were Georgia McKinney of Lone Jack, Jeremy McGowan, Blue Springs, Sarah Rousseau, Blue Springs and Jackie Peck, St. Joseph.

Prizes for the finalists include a 42-inch LG plasma TV from Independence Audio-Video; a leather recliner from Brown’s Furniture; a VIP Suite at the Hilton Garden Inn; and an executive package from Bolero Salon and Spa.

All five finalists will receive two opening-night hockey tickets.
