  • Ruby Virginia Short, 81, of Independence, Mo., passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013.
    Ruby was born April 9, 1932, in Palmyra, Mo., the daughter of Everett and Stella (White) McGlaughlin. Ruby had lived in Independence since 1952. She was a Customer Service Rep for AT&T for 30 years and retired in August of 1983. Ruby married Tommy Lee Short in 1956. He preceded her in death on May 15, 2013. Ruby was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, sewing and quilting. Ruby always had a smile on her face. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sisters, Betty Ryan and Mary Baker, and a brother, Tommy McGlaughlin.
    Survivors include her son, Tommy Ray Short and wife, Oralia, of Independence, Mo.; a grandson, Matthew Short, and granddaughter, Kellie Short; three brothers, Eugene McGlaughlin of Macomb, Ill., Kenneth McGlaughlin of Colchester, Ill., and Gilbert McGlaughlin of Quincy, Ill.; and two sisters, Evelyn Johnston of Maywood, Mo., and Lou Vondale of Williston, N.D.
    Services will be Saturday, July 20, at New Salem Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Burial in New Salem Cemetery.
