  • Ruth Evelyn Reid Summers passed away on July 16, 2013, at her home in Galmey, Mo.
    Ruth was born on April 25, 1931, in Atchison, Kan., the daughter of John and Gladys Reid. The family lived in the Good Intent area near Atchison, and Ruth remained in Atchison until her marriage to Doyle Summers on November 30, 1974. The couple lived in Independence, Mo., until 1997 when they relocated to Lake Pomme de Terre in Southwest Missouri.
    Ruth attended Bellevue Grade School and was a 1949 graduate of Atchison High School in Atchison, Kan. Ruth worked at the lunch counter at Woolworth’s in Atchison in the early 1950s, and was a switchboard operator with Blue Valley Savings and Loan, Independence, Mo., in the 1990s. She was the Centennial Princess during the 1954 Atchison Centennial and a candidate for queen of the KC American Royal in the early 1950s. She was an animal lover, artist, and gardener; and Ruth and Doyle enjoyed dancing, water sports, and camping. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Atchison and and later joined the Community Bible Church in Galmey, Mo.
    She is survived by her husband, Doyle; daughter, Donna Brown (Gary) of Charleston, Mo.; four stepchildren: Pamela Shaw (Robbie); Patrice Norris; Paige Osborn; and Bill Summers (Diane); all of the Kansas City area; 19 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. She also leaves a niece, Janet Reid Straub (Bob), Topeka, Kan.; nephews Steve Reid (Angie), Newton, Kan., and Phil Reid (Debbie), Basehor, Kan.; and brother-in-law Paul Summers (Barbara), Springfield, Mo. Besides her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her son, Danny Kibler; step-daughter Paula Snyder; and her brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Harriet Reid.
    Services will be on Monday, July 22, at 3:00 pm at Chapel of Memories Funeral Home, 30000 E. Valor Drive, Grain Valley, Mo. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 2:00 pm. She will be laid to rest in Swan Lake Memorial Park, Grain Valley, Mo. Friends and family are invited to a granddaughter’s home for a light meal following the services; a map will be provided at the service. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Galmey Community Bible Church.
    Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice sent to the funeral home.
