  • Evening Under the Stars - Sunset at Key West is coming up Saturday, Aug. 24. Sponsored by the Truman Medical Center Lakewood Auxiliary, the night of food and music under the portico at TMC will raise money for the dental program, which visits Independence schools to provide care to students. The event is co-chaired this year by Independence City Council Member Eileen Weir and Kansas City Councilwoman Cindy Circo.
Circo answered some questions from The Examiner about the event.
    1. Tell us about the TMC dental van and what it does for kids.
In October 2011, TMC Lakewood’s dental staff developed a program for the Independence School District, to meet the growing dental needs of students. The program requires staff to use portable, often borrowed, equipment and set up in whatever available space there is in a school. The purchase and use of the mobile dental coach will allow dentists to provide full service, fully accessible care at each school and a more extensive range of services than is currently available with the portable equipment.
    2. How does the Evening Under the Stars help that program?
Last year’s event helped provide a large portion of the money needed to purchase the outfitted coach. TMC expects the bus to be delivered in the next couple of months and the mobile dental program will shift to the coach. This year’s event will help raise funds for ongoing operational costs of the program and the coach in order to continue providing care for the more than 2,000 students of the Independence School District.
    3. What is the fundraising goal for this year?
TMC has set a fund raising goal of about $150,000 for this year’s event.
    4. What can guests expect?
Evening Under the Stars – Sunset at Key West is the signature fundraiser for the TMC Lakewood Auxiliary. The evening event is truly under the stars, outside under the trademark green portico entrance at TMC Lakewood. The event will have live, hot music by the island rock band Soca Jukebox, amazing food from Plaza Catering all with a tropical theme – palm trees, flamingos and great entertainment. We promise all a fun evening with about 500 of your closest friends.

    5. Can you still get tickets?
Tickets are certainly still available. They are $75 and you can order them by calling 816-404-7EUS or online at http://lakewoodeus-eac2.eventbrite.com/.
