  • Junior Arti Church gutted out a 9-7 singles win for Fort Osage, then teamed with senior Emily Shinodo to take the decisive doubles match as the Indians slipped past Truman for a 5-4 season-opening win Wednesday at Santa Fe Trail Park.
“I was very pleased with the way the girls played tonight in such heat and humidity,” Fort Osage coach Jordan Groves said. “Several of them played long, close matches.
“Arti Church barely won an exciting singles match against Shelby Calfas. I was proud of how consistently she played this evening. She made much fewer unforced errors tonight than she did last year. I am hopeful that we will see more matches like this out of her this season.”
In addition to Church’s win over Calfas, Fort Osage also got singles wins at the 2 through 4 slots. Ashley Hahne downed Emma Fuller 8-4, Elizabeth Shade handled Kelsy Ritchell 8-2 and Maranda Harris upended Madison Gram 8-4.
Truman’s singles wins came from Courtney Martin over Shinodo, 8-5, and Holly Shultz over Moriah Dowty, 8-6.
In doubles play, Truman’s Fuller and Crownover beat Hahne and Shade 11-9, while Calfas and Shultz notched a 10-4 win over Harris and Micah Neale.
Church and Shinodo, teaming for the first time in double play, tallied a 10-7 win over Martin and Martin and Ritchell.
“It was another long and exciting match to end the evening and decide the varsity dual,” Groves said. “I am excited about how the two girls worked together as a team. I think there will be good chemistry from them as a doubles team.
“Ashley Hahne played the same consistent style of play that I counted on last year from her. She is playing a couple spots higher on our roster this year. I was pleased to see her rise to the occasion tonight. I was also very excited for singles wins from two of our new varsity players this year, Elizabeth Shade and Maranda Harris. Both of them moved up from JV last year. They both played very well in their singles matches.”
Fort Osage also won the junior varsity match 6-3.
