The Grain Valley girls tennis team is no longer undefeated.

Small-class state power Pembroke Hill downed the Eagles 7-2 Monday for their first loss in seven matches.

Darby Scharfenkamp figured in both Eagle victories. She prevailed 10-8 in No. 3 singles and teamed with Hannah Weichmann for an 8-4 doubles decision.

“I was pleased with our play,” Grain Valley coach Randy Draper said. “We had a shot. Darby played really well. I hope the match helps us down the road.”

BARSTOW 8, BLUE SPRINGS SOUTH 1: The Jaguars were no match for perennially strong Barstow.

No. 6 singles player Tiffany Davenport posted the only South victory, prevailing 10-8 for the Jaguars (2-5).

“We faced off against what will surely be one of the top teams in the state once again,” South coach Jake Estep said. “Barstow placed second overall as a team last year at state. While the score looks lopsided, it’s important to note that we played nine matches in total and it took around three hours and 15 minutes. We made their girls work for it. We had two matches go to a tiebreaker. Our girls played their tails off.”
