The Blue Springs South boys swimming and diving team showed that it should be a factor at state with its performance in the CoMo Invitational Saturday in Columbia.
The Jaguars won three events to finish third in the 28-team event with 231.5 points at the Mizzou Aquatics Center. Lee’s Summit North captured the title with a total of 282.5 to beat Parkway West (251) and South. Raytown (38) was 17th.
Connor Gregston led the way for the Jaguars with event wins in the 50- (21.75 seconds) and 100-yard (47.89) freestyles. He tied for first in the 100 with Parkway Central’s Zach Rogers.
James Poole led a strong South showing in diving. Poole won with an 11-dive total of 357.35 while Eric Horn (322.90) took second and Noah Hardin (288.95) was fourth.
Chris Branch qualified for state with a 10th-place showing in the 500 freestyle (5:07.24), which was won by North’s Ethan Bresette (4:46.01).
South’s Jack Pluenneke (1:59.57) was second to Bresette (1:55.12) in the 200 individual medley and took third in the 500 free (4:53.46). Connor Dillon turned in a third in the 50 free (22.37) and sixth in the 100 (50.24). South (1:29.77) also took second to North (1:29.54) in the 200 freestyle relay. North (3:17.67) also won the 400 free relay while the Jaguars (3:19.84) took fourth.
