  • A homeless man faces murder charges after a man was killed Sunday at an Independence motel.
Vaughn L. Krepps, 37, who has no known address, was charged Monday in Jackson County Court with second-degree murder in Sunday’s shooting that killed Thomas Kuether.
According to court documents, Krepps was preparing to finish tattoo work on some people in a room at the Super 6 motel at 4142 S. Noland Road in Independence. Witnesses told police that Krepps then stood, looked at the victim and said, “What did you just say?” He then allegedly pulled a handgun from his pants and fired one shot at Kuether.
Witnesses told police that Krepps then fled on foot. Police found him near 31st Street and Crysler Avenue and arrested him. He was identified by three witnesses in a photo lineup as the person who shot Kuether.
Kuether was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a single gunshot to his abdomen.
The Jackson County prosector’s office said that bond has been set at $150,000. Krepps is scheduled to make his first court appearance at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
