  • A Kansas City man pleaded guilty Tuesday in a 2011 shooting death at the Hawthorne Place Apartments complex in Independence.
Ronald T. Taylor, 34, pleaded guilty to the murder of Lonzo O. Lamar, a Kansas City man who was found fatally shot in the apartment complex’s parking lot on Aug. 22, 2011.
As part of a plea agreement, Taylor was sentenced to 14 years for the murder. He was also sentenced to three years on one count of armed criminal action and seven years each on unlawful possession of a firearm and distribution of drugs. Every sentence will run concurrently, so he will serve a total of 14 years.
Taylor was first charged with first-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action and a count of aggravated assault, but the charges were later amended.
Police said at the time that two groups of people were involved in an altercation at the Hawthorne complex near U.S. 24 and Missouri 291, and Taylor shot Lamar in the back of the head and the left shoulder with a semiautomatic handgun during the conflict. Another victim, Victor Howard, was shot multiple times in the neck, chest, left arm and left leg but survived.
Police arrested Taylor in a traffic stop on Missouri 291 following the shootings. While in jail, Taylor called a woman and told her that he had shot two people. Police had been recording the conversation.
