Sevendust frontman Lajon Witherspoon is absolutely crackling with energy and excitement.

He and his bandmates are going to rock the Kansas Speedway tonight in a show that allows him to perform in front of friends, family members and some of Sevendust's most ardent fans as Witherspoon calls Kansas City home.

“I met my wife Ashley here in Kansas City nine years ago,” said Witherspoon, whose newest album, “Black Out the Sun,” took over the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Top Hard Music Albums, “and we got to thinking - this is a great community, great schools, a wonderful place to raise a family and the best barbecue you're ever going to find.

“It was an easy decision and one we're both very happy with. My daughters (Maya and Jada) can visit their grandparents and it just makes you feel blessed to have the best of both worlds - a wonderful place to live and now we’re going out on tour and kicking it off at the Kansas Speedway.

“It doesn’t get much better than that, does it?”

“Black Out the Sun” is Sevendust's most personal and uncompromising album, and the fans are loving it.

“We're getting a great response from the fans,” Witherspoon said. “The title of the album came from a dream I had where the sun was just going away. I was looking for safety and all of a sudden, it just blacked out. It was scary.”

The song “Black Out the Sun” is personal on many levels for Witherspoon and guitarist Clint Lowery.

“It turned out to be about Clint writing about the death of his father,” Witherspoon said. “We're all getting older, and we can put our emotions, our feelings, into our music.”

Speaking of getting older, Witherspoon celebrated a birthday on Thursday.

“This concert on the fourth is kind of turning into a birthday bash, and I know it’s going to be a lot of fun,” the personable Nashville native said. “Playing at home, at the Speedway with all our family and friends there, it’s going to be the best birthday present ever.”

The concert is part of KQRC 98.9 The Rock’s Low-Dow Shows with tickets priced at $9.89.
