  • Broncos run over Wildcats for title

    Lee’s Summit North is the Suburban Big Six girls tennis champion.
    The Broncos finished 5-0 in the conference and improved to a stellar 15-1 overall with a 9-0 victory Thursday over visiting Blue Springs.
    “The girls really adjusted well both to a new lineup and the windy conditions,” North coach Stu Reece said. “I saw a lot of potential with some of our younger girls if they decide to keep working for their goals.”
    Jenny Krause (10-0), Beta Lehr (10-2), Alexandra Mesias (10-2), Emily Kershner (10-3), Erica Sullivan (0-4) and Emilee Dent (10-0) posted singles wins for the Broncos. Vilune Sestokaite and Alyson Moore (10-3), Mesias and Sarah Welsh (10-3) and Elsa Frisk and Ashley Masters (10-6) prevailed in doubles.
    North was a 6-3 junior varsity winner.
    Earlier this week, in the Tournament of Champions in Wichita, Kan., Lee’s Summit North placed second with 110 points.
    The Broncos finished first and second in doubles as Logan Morrissey and Camryn Parnell defeated Sestokaite and Moore 8-1 in the finals. Krause and Lehr each went 3-2 in singles, finishing 13th and 19th, respectively.
    TRUMAN 9, RUSKIN 0: Truman lost only eight games in posting an easy Suburban Middle Six victory at Santa Fe Trail Park.
    Shelby Calfas, Madison Gram, Holly Shultz and Makenna Miller each won 8-0, Courtney Martin 8-4 and Lucy Wray 8-1 in singles. Heather Wall and Chloe Miller triumphed 8-2, Makenna Miller and Emma Baker 8-1 and Skylar Fulton and Kayla Hill 8-0 in doubles.
    The junior varsity was another 9-0 Truman victory due to forfeits.
    MRVC TOURNAMENT: Grain Valley followed its league championship by dominating the league tournament Thursday at Odessa with 52 points. Harrisonville was a distant second with 22. The Eagles swept all six singles and three doubles matches.
    Grain Valley singles champions were Nathalia Barr, Kayelee Smith, Hannah Wiechmann, Darby Scharfenkamp, Chelsea Gabriel and Mikki Sickel. The Eagles doubles champions were Barr and Smith, Scharfenkamp and Wiechmann and Gabriel and Sickel.
