The Grain Valley girls tennis team has passed its first test in postseason play.
The host Eagles were an easy 5-0 victory over Richmond Tuesday and will meet the Lafayette County-Odessa winner today in the Class 1 District 14 championship.
Kayelee Smith 6-0, 6-2, Hannah Wiechmann 6-0, 6-0, Darby Scharfenkamp 6-1, 6-0, Chelsea Gabriel 6-1, 6-0 and Mikki Sickle 6-0, 6-0 were the singles winners.
No. 1 player Nathalia Barr was leading Bailey Busse 6-3, 6-5 in the No. 1 singles match when it was stopped because Grain Valley (16-1) had already garnered the necessary five wins to clinch the victory. Busse had defeated Barr four consecutive times and was the two-time conference champion.
“It was one of the toughest things I’ve had to do,” Grain Valley coach Randy Draper said of stopping the match. “I was really proud of her. The team is playing well, and I am anxious to see what we can do.”
