  • The big screen couldn't do justice for the Blue Springs cross-town rivalry that comes with Community Unity week.
Along with cheering on their teams, the fans of both sides see who can give back to the community the most. The two high schools hold canned food drives and sell Cat/Jag Madness t-shirts, but the support extends far past the walls of the schools. Chick-fil-A and Smoothie Factory have set up a way for the community to give money back to their schools. All of these events have been added to the fun of the football game to show who really runs this town!
In order to raise the most canned foods this year, we have set up a competition within our fourth hour classes. Bingo cards with an assortment of non-perishable items were given to each class; the classes can be entered in for raffles depending on how many bingo's they earn. The winner of the raffle receives a pizza party delivered to them during class. Students can also purchase Cat Madness t-shirts at the school which a percentage of each shirt benefits the Community Service League. In an effort to outsell the Wildcats, South has also made Jag Madness T-shirts.
Last Sunday the Student Senates of both Blue Springs and Blue Springs South met at Chick-fil-A to decorate their half of the restaurant for this week's competition. We managed to have a great time in spite of our rivalry. Both schools are given the entire school week to get as many people to eat at Chick-fil-A as possible, and with each order ten percent of the total cost is given back to the school the customer says they support.
The Wildcats took the honorary Cow Trophy home last year and plan on recieving it again at halftime this year!
Smoothie Factory is a new addition to the Community Unity competition; they have created a new flavor for each team. We are trying to sell more “Wild-Berry” so that the Wildcats can be put on their hall of fame. At Blue Springs we've encouraged all sports teams and clubs to set a day or two aside that they can go to these locations as a group. Our teachers are so supportive that some are willing to take orders during lunch in order to give us an edge.
This huge rivalry will bring a great atmosphere to the game as fans of both teams come to watch two great football programs clash. This week serves as a way for our whole community to show their spirit and give back what they can to other families and our schools. It's a Wildcat home game so we hope to see our side packed and cheering on our players as they bring an end to a week full of competition.
