Five Grain Valley girls tennis members remain in contention for individual state honors.
Chelsea Gabriel fell to Richmond standout Bailey Busse 6-0, 6-1 in the district singles final Saturday. But Nathalia Barr and Kayelee Smith defeated teammates Darby Scharfenkamp and Hannah Wiechmann 6-4, 6-1 in the doubles finals.
All five compete today at Pembroke Hill, needing to win one match to advance to individual state competition. Grain Valley’s other singles player Mikki Sickle went 1-1. Barr and Smith were 3-0.
“It’s great to advance five kids,” Grain Valley coach Randy Draper said. “It’s tough to get out.”
Gabriel has a 21-3 record, Barr and Smith are 20-2 and Scharfenkamp and Wiechmann 19-3.
Grain Valley meets St. Pius X Saturday in the Class 1 team sectional.
