One Lee’s Summit North tennis doubles team will be making a return trip to state.

North’s Logan Morrissey and Camryn Parnell downed Allison and Megan Finneseth of Lee’s Summit West 6-2, 6-1 in sectionals Tuesday at West to claim a spot at the individual state championships Oct. 24-26 in Springfield.

“Very steady performance,” Broncos coach Stu Reece said of the duo that is 21-2 together this season. “They are excited to return to state and are looking to improve on last season’s sixth-place finish.”

North’s other doubles team, Vilune Sestokaite and Alyson Moore, fell 6-1, 6-4 to Notre Dame de Sion’s Jane King and Margo Gerke.

In singles, Blue Springs South’s Leah Bell and North’s Jenny Krause finished one win away from state. Bell lost 6-0, 6-0 to Lee’s Summit’s Tess Herder, while Sion’s Michaela Henne defeated Krause 6-2, 6-1.

North also remains alive in team play. The Broncos meet Park Hill South in Saturday’s team sectional.

CLASS 1 SECTIONAL: Individual season play is over for five Grain Valley players.

Singles player Chelsea Gabriel fell to Barstow’s Kathryn Lundgren 6-1, 6-1 at Pembroke Hill Tuesday.

Both Eagle doubles teams lost. Nathalia Barr and Kayelee Smith fell to Cindy Wang and Ellison Rooney of Pembroke Hill 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 4-6, and Darby Scharfenkamp and Hannah Wiechmann were beaten by Barstow’s Alena Fry and Maddie Tadros 6-0, 6-0. Fry is the defending state singles champion but decided to focus on doubles this season.

“I was pleased with the way our kids played,” Grain Valley coach Randy Draper said. “We had a shot in doubles with Barr and Smith. It was close. We knew it would be.”

Sectional team competition remains for the Eagles against St. Pius X at 9 a.m. Saturday at Chillicothe. If the Eagles win, they would play the Barstow-Chillicothe winner for the right to advance to the team state tournament.

The Eagles advanced with wins in Saturday's individual district tournament.

Gabriel fell to Richmond standout Bailey Busse 6-0, 6-1 in the singles finals but advanced with a second-place showing. Barr and Smith defeated teammates Scharfenkamp and Wiechmann 6-4, 6-1 in the doubles finals.

Grain Valley’s other singles player, Mikki Sickle, went 1-1. Barr and Smith were 3-0.

“It’s great to advance five kids,” Draper said. “It’s tough to get out.”
