The first entry of the acclaimed Chronicles of Narnia book series will be adapted to stage by Blue Springs High School.
This year’s fall production is “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.”
Based on the popular children books by C.S. Lewis and Disney movies, this renditon will be family-oriented. Lisa Lowman, the school’s theater teacher and play director, invites families to bring children of all ages to watch the show.
During World War II, four siblings discover a magic portal that travels them to a mystical land called Narnia where they encounter talking animals and creatures. They eventually battle the evil White Witch over rule of the land.
“This adaptation of the story is primarily geared for families,” says Lowman.
Lowman said the book was chosen for this year’s fall play because “the story really resonates and connects with the students. The series popularity with kids was another reason as well.”
The students prepared extensively for their roles. Max Docktor, a senior, plays Aslan, the titular lion in the play.
“The reason I chose to play Aslan was because of his fatherly leader characteristics,” he says. “Aslan is sort of a representation of Jesus Christ and I read some sections of the Bible for inspiration.”
Lyric Davis, another senior, plays the maternal role of Mrs. Beaver. “I like the part because I always felt that I connect to motherly, caring roles. It reflects my personality.”
Students have been hard at work since early September with set designs and rehearsals. They are eager to exhibit their efforts at the performances.
The play will run tonight through Saturday at the Blue Springs High School Performing Arts Center auditorium at 2000 NW Ashton Drive. All three performances begin at 7:00 p.m.
Ticket prices for the performance are $5. Kids 12 and under will be admitted for free if attendees email Lowman at firstname.lastname@example.org to request coupons. These coupons will need to be printed and presented at the ticket booth on the night of the performance.
