An Independence man was sentenced in Jackson County court Friday to 20 years for shooting and stabbing his wife and burning their home.
Edward D. Valdepena, 66, was sentenced to 20 years on each of two counts of first-degree domestic assault, 10 years on each of two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, 10 years on first-degree burglary, seven years for second-degree arson and 1 year for violation of an order of protection. All sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve 20 years.
Valdepena’s trial was scheduled to begin next week, but he accepted a plea agreement.
According to court records, on July 19, 2012, Valdepena burned the couple’s home they used to share in Independence. He then went to a home where his wife was staying in Kansas City, violating the court order she had against him by crashing his vehicle into the house.
Valdepena shot his wife twice in the stomach before the gun jammed, and then stabbed her with a knife. A neighbor intervened and held the man at gunpoint until police arrived at the scene. The woman survived.
