Blue Springs South’s soccer team poured on four second-half goals, two of them from Sam Leech, to post a 5-0 Suburban Big Six win over Liberty and complete a conference sweep of the Blue Jays.

Bryce Childers’ header off a Ryan Poertner throw-in in the 23rd minute staked South (13-6-1, 7-1 Big Six) to a 1-0 halftime lead.

Kyle Findley scored unassisted in the 52nd minute, and Jacob Gowan converted a Leech assist 10 minutes later for a 3-0 lead. Leech scored in the 70th and 75th minutes off two more Poertner throw-ins, the last one coming on a header.

“Great win for us,” South coach Jon Grice said. “We were fortunate early to have a couple looks they didn’t convert. After the half we went back to what we do best – passed to feet kept moving forward, and we got back into the habit of capitalizing on Ryan’s throw-ins.”

Nick Shafer made five saves in goal to post the shutout, dropping Liberty to 10-9.

“It’s the first I can remember us sweeping Liberty in conference play,” Grice said.

Liberty’s junior varsity managed a 1-0 win.
