Independence police on Thursday issued dozens of tickets to drivers near schools and school buses.
This is National School Bus Safety Week, and police worked with the Independence School District on Thursday’s enforcement event.
Summons were issued for 38 school zone speeding violations and two stop-arm violations, as well as five seat-belt violations, one hazardous moving violation, 10 vehicle license violations, 10 proof-of-insurance violations and four valid-drivers-license violations.
Also, Independence police say they made more than a dozen arrests in a recent saturation patrol targeting drunken drivers.
It was from 10 p.m. last Friday through 3 a.m. Saturday in the southeast part of the city.
Police made three arrests on charges of driving while intoxicated, 10 arrests on outstanding warrants and one liquor arrest. They also issued citations for 23 hazardous moving violations, 10 for no valid driver’s license and 42 for other traffic violations.
A sobriety checkpoint planned at about the same time was canceled because of the bad weather.
