A Raytown man who was shot while attempting a robbery in Independence Saturday night faces charges in the home invasion on South Park Avenue.

John D. Pierson, 26, was charged Monday with first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary for attempting to rob a house in the 800 block of South Park, in central Independence, with another man.

Pierson was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. The two residents of the house were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Independence police say the second suspect remains at large.

According to court documents, two men reportedly forced their way into the house and physically assaulted the two men who lived there. They demanded pills from the men living there and robbed one of $150 in cash and his cell phone.

One victim told Pierson and the other intruder that he would get them what they wanted and was allowed to go into his bedroom unescorted. He returned with a loaded 12-gauge shotgun and fired at Pierson in the abdomen while the men stood in the hallway near the other man’s bedroom door. The second suspect fled and has not been identified.

When police arrived, Pierson was apprehended at the scene and taken to a hospital, where prosecutors say he is recovering. Prosecutors have requested a bond of $100,000.

The second suspect is described as a white man in his 30s, about 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10 and skinny. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.
