An Independence lawyer is one of three nominees to fill a judicial vacancy in Jackson County. Patricia Scaglia has a private law practice in Independence. She is a nominee, along with Michael Hunt and Jalilah Otto to fill the Division 26 associate circuit judge opening created by the appointment of Kenneth R. Garrett III to circuit judge. In all, 22 applied for the position. Hunt is chief trial attorney for the Jackson County prosecutor’s office. Otto also is chief trial attorney for the prosecutor’s office and special assistant U.S. attorney in the Western District. The 16th Circuit Judicial Commission submitted the panel of nominees to Gov. Jay Nixon, who has 60 days to appoint one of them to the bench. The c ommission is chaired by Western District Appeals Court Chief Judge James Edward Welsh. Members are attorneys Scott Bethune and Teresa Woody and lay members Eric Williams and William Gautreaux.
