  • DENVER – The Denver Cutthroats scored three unanswered goals in the third period to break open a 1-1 game and claim a 4-1 victory over the Missouri Mavericks Tuesday night.
The Mavericks went 1-2 on the road trip, splitting two games in Rapid City, S.D., and dropping the Tuesday night contest to the 7-3-3 Cutthroats.
The 9-2-0 Mavericks return to the Independence Events Center for a 7:05 p.m. game Friday against the St. Charles Chill. The Mavericks and Chill will play two games this weekend, with another 7:05 p.m. contest Saturday.
Denver's Cam Reid scored just 46 seconds into the first period against goalie Joe Howe, but the Mavericks were able to knot the score at 1-all when Andrew Courtney scored his seventh goal of the season at 8:59 of the second period. Matt Stephenson and Sebastien Thinel assisted on the goal.
Thinel now has scored a point in nine games in a row.
Reid's second goal of the night was the game-winner, as Denver's Garett Bembridge scored the final two goals, with the last coming into an empty net.
“A simple matter of fatigue,” Mavericks coach Scott Hillman said by phone after the game. “Our third game on the road, we were battling the altitude and just ran out of gas in the third period.
“We've played nine of 11 on the road, and it's going to be so good to get back to the friendly confines of the Events Center Friday night.”
The Mavericks were unable to convert on three power plays, while the Cutthroats were 1 of 2 with an extra man. Howe, making his third start this season, stopped 28 of 31 shots to fall to 2-1-0.
