Michelle Metje, whose son Corey Laykovich was killed four months ago in an unsolved stabbing, is hosting a birthday party fundraiser at 6 p.m. Saturday at DiCarlo’s Mustard Seed, 15015 E. U.S. 40, in Independence.
Metje’s birthday is Wednesday, and she’s asking for donations to Laykovich’s reward fund. There will be a silent auction as part of the fundraiser.
Laykovich, 22, was the victim of an overnight stabbing July 27 near the 3900 block of Crackerneck Road in Independence. After being dropped off nearby by friends, Laykovich reportedly said he was going to the nearby QuikTrip, but whether he made it there is unclear. He returned home at about 2 a.m. after suffering the stab wound and soon was rushed to a local hospital, where he died the next day.
Police have not made an arrest in the case. Earlier this month the reward was raised to $5,000 after Metje made a contribution. Anyone with information is urgued to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477, email www.KCcrimestoppers.com or text TIP452 to 274637 (CRIMES).
