Blue Springs South broke open a close game in the second half for a 53-37 girls basketball victory at St. Teresa’s Academy Monday night.
“We missed layups, and the free throw shooting wasn’t very good,” South coach Brad Oyler said. “We struggled but the defense was good. We led by only a point of two at halftime.”
But South (2-0) took control of the game in the second half.
Cloe Lane’s 15 points and Shannon Hughes’ nine were tops for the Jaguars.
GRAIN VALLEY 59, WARRENSBURG 37: Two freshmen made the season opener rewarding for Grain Valley.
Claire Rose had 14 points and Kendyll Bailey 13 as the Eagles routed Warrensburg in the opening round of the Marshall Tournament. Darby Scharfenkamp added 10 points and Sarah Turner eight.
“It was good start for us,” Grain Valley coach Randy Draper said. “I was pleased.”
Grain Valley was in control throughout, owning quarter leads of 15-8, 30-18 and 41-29.
The Eagles take on the Marshall vs. Windsor winner at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinals.
LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 59, LINCOLN PREP 39: Lee’s Summit North broke to a 26-14 opening-quarter lead to set up the opening-round victory in the Lee’s Summit North Tournament.
Imani Johnson scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace the Broncos (2-0). Erica Nelson and Taylor Creason each added nine points. North led 37-20 at halftime, and the starters didn’t play in the fourth quarter.
“We played better,” North coach Tricia Lillygren said. “We still have many improvements.”
North takes on Notre Dame de Sion at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinals.
METRO MAVERICKS 90, VAN HORN 35: The season did not start well for Van Horn and new coach Scorpio Horn.
The Falcons never were a threat in falling to the Metro Mavericks in the opening round of the Summit Christian Academy Tournament. Hannah Bishop scored 12 points and Malaea Ortiz 10 to lead the Falcons.
“We’ll get better,” said Horn. “We have 10 girls, and most have not played a lot. The girls are learning so many new things.”
Van Horn plays again at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday against the Sherwood-Summit Christian Academy loser.
