Daniel Mahurin wasn’t a one-man team, but he did a lot to get the Grain Valley boys basketball team a chance at a tournament title.

Mahurin fired in 30 points to help boost the Eagles to a 68-48 victory over Marshall in the Sedalia Sacred Heart Gremlin Invitational Thursday night. A win over the host Gremlins at 7 p.m. Saturday would give the Eagles the title.

“He shot it really well,” Grain Valley coach Andy Herbert said of Mahurin, a 6-foot-3 senior guard who sank six 3-pointers. “The guys did a great job of getting him the ball, and he did the rest.”

Cody Zeigler contributed 11 points and Hunter Ramirez chipped in eight points as the Eagles improved to 2-0 in the tournament and overall. Grain Valley jumped to a 32-20 halftime lead and cruised to the win.

VAN HORN 71, KANSAS CITY LUTHERAN 61: Van Horn got up big and then held off a furious rally by Lutheran to post a consolation victory in the Summit Christian Academy Eagle Invitational Thursday.

Isaiah Gotsis poured in 20 points to lead four scorers in double figures for the Falcons (1-1).

Van Horn built a 54-38 lead before Lutheran outscored the Falcons 23-17 in the final quarter to close the gap.

“We played pretty well and were up big in the third quarter,” Van Horn coach Daniel Bieser said. “I wish we would have closed it out better in the fourth, though. But we’ll get there. We’re still pretty young and inexperienced.”
