  • The Blue Springs South girls swimming and diving team got the season off to a strong start with a sweep of a five-team meet Tuesday.
The Jaguars won three events as they topped Liberty 165-150, St. Pius X 209-84, O’Hara 243-33 and Marshall 242-49 at the Blue Springs Family YMCA.
“Good opener,” South coach Errich Oberlander said. “We are pretty young and it was good to see our young girls perform early.”
Diver Allie Steinhauser wasted no time earning a return trip to state by winning with a total of 218.65 points to surpass the state standard of 210.
Bailey Barnett topped the field in the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 25.66 seconds, while Kayla Canon dominated the 100 breaststroke field in 1:18.14.
Claiming second for the Jaguars were Barnett (100 freestyle), Kadie Clark (200 freestyle), Taylor Branson (50 freestyle), Anna Munoz (100 butterfly), Lena Sleyster (diving), Leza Dorrance (500 freestyle), Claire Davis (100 backstroke) and all three relay teams.
PARK HILL SOUTH 121, BLUE SPRINGS 65: It didn’t take long for some members of the Blue Springs girls swimming and diving team to punch their tickets to state.
Despite a 121-65 loss to Park Hill South in the season-opening dual Tuesday at Park Hill High School, the Wildcats earned four berths to the state meet.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Lindsey Meyer, Corinne Rinne, Ashley Sturman and Leigh Ana Dietiker earned a state cut in the first race, taking second in 1:58.56.
Sturman then earned two state cuts with a pair of wins in the 100 butterfly (1:01.44) and the 500 freestyle (5:27.65). Rinne, the defending state champion in the breaststroke, is returning to state in that event after winning in 1:10.49.
Earning second-place finishes for the Wildcats were Meyer (50 freestyle), Rinne (200 IM), Marie Kurucz (500 freestyle) and Lauren Jackson (diving) and the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.
