  • Independence residents light up the evening with a holiday glow.
The annual Holiday Lighting Contest sponsored by The Examiner and Independence Power and Light was won by Ed Montgomery of the 3300 block of Blue Ridge Boulevard. The judges commented on the elegant, tasteful approach, with candy canes, icicles and traditional themes.
Second place goes to Glendon Thomas of the 15100 block of East 40th Street, a display with an emphasis on trees and candy canes plus shifting colors and patterns of light on the roof.
Michael Adams, who lives in the 1600 block of Belvidere, took third. He said the display, with Santa, Frosty, a penguin and a U.S. flag among other items, took a couple of weeks to get set up.
I think this is about the tenth year Ive done it, he said.
His efforts have encouraged other neighbors to get into the act, too.
We have quite a few, he said.
