‘Living the Promises’ for a better life in 2014

Eastgate Christian Church in Independence is offering sermons on spiritual tools to improve life in the new year.

The Rev. Joshua Patty, the senior minister, will offer “Tools for Living the Promises,” six sermons, the first three of which are:

• Jan. 5: “Preparing with Role Play,” a look at how the Magi effectively prepared for a journey with unforeseen snaps.

• Jan. 12: “Praying with Open Eyes,” considering how Daniel prayed knowing others were watching.

• Jan. 19: “Giving with Purpose,” a reflection on how we share with others, guided by the wisdom of Proverbs.

‘A New Commandment ... Love’ is sermon’s theme

Ray McClaran will speak on the theme “A New Commandment … Love” at the 10:20 a.m. worship service on Sunday (Dec. 29) at the Stone Church Community of Christ, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence.

Eric Scott will preside. Others participating in the service are Sheryl McClaran, Kristopher Taylor, LaDora Cripps and Paulette V. Resch. Special music is provided by Jena Wight and John Davies.

Gospel sing at Calvary Baptist

Calvary Baptist Church will hold a New Year’s Eve gospel sing from 6 p.m. to midnight.

The church is at 900 N.W. 22nd St., Blue Springs. The event will include several individuals and groups. There will be a break at 8 p.m. for refreshments and fellowship, then the evening continues with music and concludes with 2013 and 2014 testimony and a prayer period.

‘Christmas Sing’ at the Groves

The choirs of The Groves and Cornerstone Community of Christ congregations will lead the congregation in “A Christmas Sing” for the 9:15 and 10:15 worship services Sunday (Dec. 29) at the Community of Christ congregation at The Groves, 1515 W. White Oak, Independence. Pat Henshaw will offer music ministry with flute stylings.

There is no Wednesday evening prayer service on Jan. 1.

Film and faith at Church of the Resurrection

The final sermon of “The Real Christmas Story,” a sermon series playing off holiday moves, will focus on “Christmas Vacation” this Sunday, Dec. 29, at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection.

The church, based in Leawood, has a campus at 601 E. Jefferson, Blue Springs. Worship is at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday. Nursery care for children from birth through age 3 is available, and Sunday school is for children age 4 through the fifth grade during services. All are invited for coffee before worship near the east entrance.

Glenwood Park United Methodist offers free health clinic

Glenwood Park Methodist Church’s next free health clinic is from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 4 at the church.

The screenings, sponsored by the Black Nurse Association and Samuel Rodgers, include glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index testing. The church, at 10000 E. 23rd St., Independence, holds the clinics on the first Saturday of the month.
