An Independence man has been arrested for driving under the influence and child endangerment.

According to Independence Police Sgt. Darrell Schmidli, Robert Hickey, 46, left the Independence QuikTrip convenience store at U.S. 40 and Sterling Avenue in a vehicle early New Year’s Day morning. He made an illegal turn and drove west in the eastbound lane of U.S. 40 and was spotted by an Independence Police traffic unit.

“There’s an island median in the center of that section on 40 Highway,” Schmidli said. “And he was driving in the wrong lane going the opposite direction. Plus he was driving without headlights.”

After police pulled over Hickey for the illegal turn and driving without headlights, they discovered an unrestrained 9-month-old passenger inside the vehicle. Schmidli said Hickey consented to a breath analysis test where he registered twice the legal limit.

Court documents show Hickey has been charged with both driving while intoxicated and second-degree child endangerment. However, they do not reveal the exact relationship between Hickey and the 9-month-old passenger. Hickey has a hearing scheduled later this month.
