Oak Grove’s wrestling team swept through its own duals tournament Saturday, boasting seven unbeaten wrestlers on its way to five convincing wins.
The Panthers down Rockhurst 54-23, Blue Springs South 49-25, Cameron 52-18, Lee’s Summit North 48-13 and Warrensburg 51-18. Not counting forfeits, South was the lone team to win more than two bouts against Oak Grove.
Brock Mercer recorded four pins and a major decision to go 5-0 at 120 pounds. Skyler Jackson (138), Bryce Mercer (145), Landon Cairer (152) and Preston Airington (195) each had a forfeit among their five wins, while Airington pinned all four of his opponents and Cairer three of them. Bryce Mercer had two pins and wins of 1-0 and 4-2 – the latter coming over Lee’s Summit North’s Keegan McCormick in a battle between returning state qualifiers. Dalton Brinegar had two forfeits among his five wins, and Shawn Kavadas (126) won all four of his matches.
Tyler Brown (132) went 4-1, Connor Brown (106) 3-1 and Jet Tryon (113) Josh Klipper (220) 2-3 for the Panthers.
Blue Springs South lost to Cameron (37-36) before beating Lee’s Summit North 45-36 and Warrensburg 37-33. The Jaguars finished their day with a 39-36 loss to Rockhurst.
South had three 5-0 wrestlers in Sam Hampton (132 pounds), Wyatt Parker (182) and Christian Boyles (220), while Sam Jackson (138) and Cole West (285) each went 4-1. Christian Findley (113), Dalton Kenig (126) and Ben Lancaster (195) went 3-2, and Seth McLain (120) managed a 2-3 mark.
“This was not what we were expecting after a decent start to the year,” South coach Doug Black said. “It seems like we took three step backwards this weekend. We made way too many mental mistakes, and it cost us two duals and that is not acceptable in this program.
“We are in January now, and the corrections will be made in the practice room. Between the mental mistakes made on our part and the couple of discipline issues, it was a tough weekend to swallow.”
