  • Blue Springs South girls swimming and diving head coach Errich Oberlander came home from Saturday’s COMO Invitational in Columbia with a good feeling.
The Jaguars swam to a third-place team finish with 218 points while gaining four state cuts Saturday at the 28-team meet at Mizzou Aquatic Center. South finished behind only Park Hill South (311) and Springfield Glendale (281). Lee’s Summit North finished 11th at 85.
“We had a great day with some surprising results,” Oberlander said of South’s performance, which included state berths for all three relays. “We had great performances across the whole team, and it is always fun to see our freshmen and their reactions to competing in the best pool in the Midwest.”
Kayla Canon led the way for the Jaguars, claiming a state berth in the 100-yard backstroke with a third-place finish in 1 minute, 1.93 seconds (1:01.06 in preliminaries). She also finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke and teamed with Kadie Clark, Anna Munoz and Bailey Barnett for a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay in a state time of 1:58.22 in the finals (1:57.82 in prelims).
South’s 200 freestyle relay squad of Sydney Dillon, Taylor Branson, Maddie Scott and Barnett also finished fourth in 1:46.35, and earned a state cut of 1:45.76 in the preliminaries. The 400 freestyle relay team of Branson, Dillon, Munoz and Clark finished fifth in 3:54.21 and also qualified for state with a time of 3:53.45 in the prelims.
Barnett also made a pair of finals, taking fifth in the 100 freestyle and seventh in the 200 freestyle. South’s other top-eight finals finishes came from Branson (fifth, 50 freestyle) and Clark (fifth, 500 freestyle). Allie Steinhauser took third in diving (360.85 points).
Haley Hynes scored the bulk of North’s points, winning the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke in state times of 2:11.04 and 56.80, respectively. She also help the Broncos finish fifth in the 200 medley relay with Kristin Herrick, Anna Kellison and Jennifer Gray.
