A man was arrested Monday for a Jan. 3 assault that occurred on the 1100 block of South Pearl Street in Independence.

Dustin S. Hillenbrand, 32, of Independence was charged with three counts that include kidnapping, domestic assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. Independence Police Public Information Officer Tom Gentry said Hillenbrand was arrested during a traffic stop  and that the department had a stop order to actively search for the man.

As previously reported, Independence Police received a call just before 3 p.m. on Jan. 3 from a female who said she was assaulted by an ex-boyfriend in the 1100 block of South Pearl Street. Sgt. Darrell Schmidli said a portion of the assault happened inside a house and the other part occurred outside in a vehicle. A bystander who witnessed the attack offered to take the female victim to an area hospital. The victim also reported that Hillenbrand was armed at one time. In response, a large police presence gathered at the scene where the assault had taken place. Independence Police obtained a search warrant around 6 p.m. that same day to apprehend him, but he was nowhere to be found.

Hillenbrand’s bond is set at $50,000.
