Anita Russell, President of the Kansas City chapter of the NAACP, will be the featured speaker at Independence’s 27th-annual observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The celebration is 7 p.m. Monday at the Truman Memorial Library, with the theme “His Legacy Through Our Eyes.”

Music will be provided by the Metropolitan Community Choir. Essay winners for the John Olivarez Scholarship, awarded to a high school senior in the city for post-graduate studies, as well as the junior high contest will be announced at the event.
