The moment Missouri Maverick defenseman Henrik Odegaard walked into the office of The Rink at Burlington Creek, a huge smile appeared on his face.
Displayed next to a table that was being readied for a news conference about the Mavericks Miracle on Ice Weekend was Ken Morrow’s 1980 USA Olympic jersey and his gold medal.
Odegaard leaves in just over two weeks for Sochi, Russia, where he will represent his native Norway in the 2014 Winter Olympics.
“To see a gold medal is special,” Odegaard said. “There is nothing better than representing your country at the Olympics. And I have the opportunity to represent my country and the Mavericks. I know a lot of Maverick fans are going to be watching Norway (Feb. 13) when we play Team Canada.
“I’m nervous and excited, but mostly I am excited. It is a great honor.”
The Mavericks are teaming with Morrow’s The Rink at Burlington Creek, Paul McGannon’s NHL21 and KCIce for the Miracle on Ice Weekend that will include opportunities to visit with the Miracle on Ice team members Mike Eruzione, Dave Christian, Buzz Schneider and Morrow at a VIP reception, skate with the former Olympians and even play a period of pond hockey on The Rink at Burlington during the day on Feb. 1.
Fans then have the opportunity that night to bid on one-of-a-kind signed items at the Mavericks game that night against Quad City and watch a period of the game from a suite with the four Olympians.
