OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — There was no stopping the Blue Springs South boys basketball team once it got rolling Wednesday.
The Jaguars outscored Kansas City (Kan.) Wyandotte 26-12 in the second quarter for a 41-17 halftime lead and went on to an easy 77-40 victory in the first round of the Shawnee Mission West Viking Classic Wednesday.
“It was a good team win,” Jaguars coach Jimmy Cain said. “We had a slow start but picked it up in the second quarter and were able to extend our lead.”
K.J. Robinson fired in 18 points and Kevin Puryear added 15 to power the Jaguars, who improved to 10-2 overall. Brandon Kilgore tallied 11 points and Thomas Abarca chipped in 10.
South faces Blue Valley (Kan.) North at 8:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.
LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 57, KANSAS CITY SOUTHWEST 37: The Broncos outscored Southwest 31-20 in the second half to secure the consolation bracket victory in the Culver’s Classic Wednesday at Lee’s Summit High School.
Caleb Berry led a balanced North attack with 13 points. Jalen Ford and Zach Lamb each contributed nine and Anthony Lupardus eight.
North (6-7) meets Raytown South at 5:30 p.m. Friday for fifth place.
“Hopefully we will play well and get to .500 heading into conference (Suburban Big Six) against Liberty next Tuesday,” North coach Mike Hilbert said.
BLUE SPRINGS 47, ST. TERESA’S ACADEMY 33: The Blue Springs girls basketball team decided to take matters into its own hands in the fourth quarter Wednesday.
After three close quarters, the Wildcats outscored St. Teresa’s 17-5 over the final eight minutes for a 47-33 consolation bracket victory in the Blue Valley North KA-MO Classic tournament in Overland Park.
“We came out and mixed up the starting lineup,” Blue Springs coach Mark Spigarelli said after his team improved to 7-8. “The kids that started and the bench played with much better intensity. We cut our turnovers down to 12 and we had been averaging about 20. That was a big plus.”
Morgan Hensley led a balanced Blue Springs attack with a season-high 11 points. Aliyah Lee added nine, Moriah Panuco and Morgan McMahan had eight each and Bri Tauai chipped in six.
Blue Springs meets the Shawnee Mission (Kan.) West-Notre Dame de Sion winner at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the fifth-place game.
VAN HORN 43, KCK TURNER 26: Improved free-throw shooting lifted Van Horn to a first-round victory in the Kansas City (Kan.) Washington Lady Cats Classic Wednesday.
“We hit 15 of 23 free throws,” Van Horn coach Scorpio Horn said. "We were able to put them in foul trouble.”
Hannah Bishop scored 15 points and Malaea Ortiz posted 12 to guide the Falcons, who meet host Washington at 6:30 tonight in the semifinals.
Van Horn (5-8) raced to a 26-14 halftime lead and was never threatened.
