Another Originals character bites the dust.
After a season of defying many of New Orleans' power players, Sophie Deveraux (Daniella Pineda) succumbed to the forces of the show's newest antagonist, Sophie's own niece, Monique (Yasmin Al Bustami). And Sophie wasn't her only target. By the end of the hour, Monique and her new band of crazy witches took Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Rebekah (Claire Holt) and left them trapped outside of the French Quarter.
So is Sophie really gone? And will Klaus and Rebekah's confinement lead to the reveal of her deepest, darkest secret of betrayal? Plus: Will Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and newcomer Jackson (Nathan Parsons) duke it out over Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin)? TVGuide.com, along with a small group of reporters, got answers to these burning questions and more from executive producer Julie Plec.
Is Sophie really dead?Julie Plec: It appears so, yes. In this case, the witches have taken their vengeance against a non-believer and I don't think there's much hope for her to recover given that more often than not you need witch intervention to have a second chance at life. So this may be the end of Miss Sophie. The Originals: Danielle Campbell reflects on the "really emotional" episode and a new villain
Was her death always in the plan?Plec: We knew there would have to be a horrible, hideous consequence [from] Sophie's efforts to lead the witch revolution. She kept coming against the wall and failing and didn't have the right faith, even in herself, as a leader to carry it off. When we realized the ultimate consequence of that would be death, we made the decision to go down that road.
Page 2 of 4 - Where are Klaus and Rebekah when the show returns after hiatus?Plec: The next episode is crazy. We go outside of the quarter and Rebekah and Klaus [are trapped] in a creepy, horrible, messed-up sanitarium from back in the day. Working between the two of them, Genevieve (Elyse Levesque) enacts her revenge and we'll learn why Genevieve's revenge is so specifically targeted towards Rebekah and what she's going to do to make Rebekah suffer as much as possible. [The Original family is] definitely under attack and this chapter has shown us that the resurrected witches have a mission and it's personal. They get as close to succeeding and tearing apart this family as we've ever seen and the outcome ... will have eternal repercussions for the family.
Is Monique the next villain?Plec: I think you have to look at her both as a villain and a victim. She was in this limbo state with what seems like direct access to angry ancestors who are very unflinching in their faith of their own abilities and their own people. So either she's a zealot who's just a product of her own environment or she's a little bit kooky. She's probably a little bit of both.
When will we see Jackson again?Plec: There won't be another full moon for a few episodes, but this is our first taste of the crescent wolves and, with luck and schedules in our favor, we'll be able to have a nice story with [him].
    The most shocking TV deaths
Will Hayley's new mission to revoke the family curse bring her into the war?Plec: It's going to be driving her forward a lot in that she made this promise to this person and has this connection to these people she barely knows because ultimately it's the bloodline she comes from and the pack that she comes from. So she's going to be very determined to free them and then ultimately in successfully freeing them there's that whole [notion of] "Who's my real family? Who do belong with?" Her draw to Elijah is very alluring, but very forbidden. So will she decide to stick around the quarter or head out to the bayou?
How will Elijah feel about Jackson being Hayley's "soul mate"?Plec: I don't think he's going to be very happy about it. We've got another few episodes before we return to the werewolf world, but this idea of her attention falling towards these people and her sense of family unity and bond drawing her towards them and away from the Originals is a lot for Elijah to handle. Ultimately, if he's able to stand face to face with Jackson he might be like, "Wait a second, I'm not sure I like this guy."
Page 3 of 4 - Is there hope for Father Kieran (Todd Stashwick)? Plec: It's not pretty. We saw what happened to Sean, his nephew, in the past so it won't be an easy thing to overcome hexes and dark objects and all that witchy business so you wonder what's reversible and what isn't.

Is Cami (Leah Pipes) on the road to becoming the human hero a la The Vampire Diaries' Matt (Zach Roerig)?Plec: We're setting up Cami to be, in her own way, offered a place at the table and whether she takes it or not will be up to her. Those human characters are so fun to play with because on one hand, it's like, "Just run, go to Topeka!" But on the other hand, she's bright and smart and understands the psychology of the brain and she's protective of human nature so it'll be fun to explore that option for her when we get down the road and to see what she'll do.
Any big flashback episodes coming up?Plec: There's a lot more story to be told about what happened in 1919. Once the Olympics are over and we come back, we definitely get a little flavor for New Orleans at the end of the influenza epidemic in 1919. Then the episode after that we dig into what happens during that period when we'll see if Mikael (Sebastian Roche) "got the message" about somebody looking for him in the French Quarter.
Speaking of 1919, will we see why Rebekah left town with Klaus? Plec: I haven't seen the edit yet, but in the script we see the scene where the siblings decide to flee.
What's Marcel's next move?Plec: The big Achilles heel for Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) has been his love for Rebekah over the centuries and the secret they carry together. So as we get into the next couple of episodes where that secret is at risk of getting exposed, ultimately, Marcel's next move will be dictated by that secret.
Page 4 of 4 - Will Klaus ever find out about their secret?Plec: From the beginning, we knew we wanted to show that Marcel has committed quite possibly the greatest betrayal against Klaus and then to find out that ultimately it wasn't just Marcel but Rebekah as well. In their history, they've gone back and forth with so much love and hate and yet have stuck together for all these centuries. We all wanted to see how he'd react to this. There is family feud and then there is family destruction. It's going to be pretty hard core.
What's the driving force in the second half of the season?Plec: It's the consequences of having f---ed with the harvest in the first place. It's the revenge as enacted by these witches. It's the disintegration of the Original family as a result, and it's a rebuilding of both the family and the city in the fallout once the domino effect of the witches' actions settle from that. And of course there is a baby coming!
