  • An Independence man faces charges in a September 2013 shooting in the 1300 block of South Sterling Avenue that left Justin Sneegas dead.
Jackson County prosecutors charged Nicholas L. Cannon, 28, of Independence, with one count each of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Sneegas.
Cannon told police he was acting in self-defense when he shot Sneegas on Sept. 15, 2013. According to the prosecutors office, Cannon was expected to turn himself into the police soon.
Prosecutors have requested a bond of $150,000 at 10 percent.
According to court documents, Cannon allegedly shot Sneegas after Cannon found his girlfriend in bed with the victim.
Shortly before 6 a.m. on Sept. 15, police were called by the girlfriend to the home on Sterling. She told police that Sneegas, who was 35 at the time, had been shot by Cannon. Emergency medical personnel attempted to revive Sneegas but were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital.
Cannon turned himself in to police later than night. He told police that his girlfriend had not returned to their home after a night out with family and friends. Cannon began looking for her and found her car parked at her parents’ home on Sterling.
Entering the home with his 4-year-old daughter, Cannon said he discovered his girlfriend and Sneegas in bed together. The girlfriend ran into the bathroom while Cannon had a verbal confrontation with Sneegas.
Cannon told police he saw Sneegas roll over and grab for an unknown object. He told police he feared for his daughter’s safety so he shot three rounds at Sneegas. He said he then kicked down the bathroom door and found his girlfriend there.
Cannon had told police he made one phone call to his girlfriend at approximately 2:30 a.m., but phone records obtained by police showed there were eight text messages and 13 phone calls from Cannon's phone to her phone from 3:36 a.m. through the time of the shooting.
