    To the editor:
Courtney Thomas, the CEO of the Great Plains SPCA, was recently chosen by My Life as one of the top 25 most influential people in Kansas. Courtney has done great things for animals in both Johnson County and the state of Kansas, but she has also done amazing things for the city of Independence!
The Great Plains SPCA became Independence’s official animal shelter in April 2013. From April through December, the euthanasia rate dropped by 33 percent and the adoption rate increased by 50 percent compared to the same rates in the full year of 2012.
These results are made possible through the strong leadership of Courtney Thomas as she guides her staff and volunteers to make Independence a better place for animals to call home. Thank you for your service to our city, Courtney, and cheers to a job well done!
