The Central Jackson County Fire Protection District has recently expanded its child car seat checks and installation program.

The district has added three more car technicians, and CJC firefighters have attended a three-day training session put on by the National Child Passenger Safety Certification program, which covers vehicle types, car seat models and the rules relating to age and weight of children.

“We believe this service is invaluable to our patrons,” says CJC Assistant Chief Eddie Saffell. “With hospitals requiring a car seat to take newborns home, more vehicles per family and other family members, like grandparents, being involved, it allows us to make sure that kids are protected as well as they can be, regardless of what car they are in.”

Saffell also said there aren’t many agencies or facilities involved in the car seat program, so a number of firefighters felt it was something they wanted to be involved in.
