  • The Independence Midtown Optimist club held its annual event, Respect for Law and Youth Appreciation, at Tim’s Pizza on Tuesday, Feb. 11. President, Willard (Frosty) Nelson, talked about the history of the club and shared they have been serving the youth of the community for 32+ years.
He turned the evening over to Dennis Stanley, charter member for 32+ years. Dennis explained what the club does and some of the events that they put on yearly. He talked about the annual fishing derby and the car show in June. He went on to state that they help a child with cancer every year at the car show.
Dennis introduced the guests to be honored for the evening. The Respect for Law award went to Officer Bryce Henderson. Captain Russell Beach talked about how Bryce is such a dedicated officer. There was a particular situation where some people were caught in Oak Grove stealing copper wire, and when someone came up on them, this person was shot. Officer Bryce’s dedication and perseverance paid off when he continued to look for the suspects and finally were able to apprehend them and pull them over and take them into custody.
The Youth Appreciation awards went to two members of the Independence Boys and Girls Club. The first award was presented by Tara Nichols. She talked about Alex Williams and told what a wonderful example of a big sister she is. She will do anything that is asked of her and more. She mentors young children and sets good examples to many children by her high standards. She does not always have a way to the club, but will walk in bad weather to keep from never missing a day at the club. The second award went to Devon Freeze. Valerie McCorkle said that Devon is another great member of the Boys and girls club. He takes out the trash and does anything asked of him and more. He volunteers to help children in any way he can. He is against bullying and steps in to help in situations to teach that bullying is not the right way to handle things. Children look up to him because of his high standards. Alex and Devon both are assets to the Boys and Girls home.
