Rebecca Jonas and Kolton Slater, both Truman High School seniors, were honored as students of the month by the Rotary Club of Independence.
Jonas is on the “A” Honor Roll, is a McCoy Medal recipient and a three-time academic letter recipient. Jonas also is a National Honor Society member and part of her school’s basketball team. She enjoys coaching and refereeing the sport through the Independence Youth Athletic Association. Plus she is a member of the THS Spanish Club. After graduation, she plans to attend Drake University on a full ride athletic scholarship to play basketball and major in education and psychology. Her parents are Bill, Maria and Dr. Harry Jonas.
Slater has an academic letter, four music letters and placed in several math competitions. After class, Slater is employed at a local Hy-Vee grocery store as second assistant manager, and he plays the piano and sings in various choirs at his school. He also sang in Europe during the summer of 2013 with the Kansas Ambassadors of Music. His future plan is to attend the University of Central Missouri to get a degree in aviation. His mother is Alicia Slater.
