EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. — A big first half paid off for the Van Horn girls basketball team.

The Falcons led 37-9 after two quarters and went on to an easy 51-24 victory over Kansas City Northeast Tuesday night in the first round of the Class 4 District 15 tournament.

“The team played well and hung in there and got the job done,” Van Horn coach Scorpio Horn said.

Hannah Bishop poured in 22 points and Malaea Ortiz added 18 to spark Van Horn.

The Falcons (8-15) meet top-seeded Lincoln Prep in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.


KANSAS CITY EAST 67, VAN HORN 62 (OT): Sixth-seeded East outscored third-seeded Van Horn 10-5 in overtime for the Class 4 District 15 upset victory at Excelsior Springs High School.

Van Horn’s Anthony Winningham hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with four seconds remaining to tie it 57-57 and send the game into overtime.

Van Horn outscored East 16-5 in the third quarter to overcome a 31-22 halftime deficit.

Isaiah Gotsis fired in 21 points, Winningham finished with 14, Jordan Spencer added 10 and Samila Sua had nine to lead Van Horn’s balanced attack.

“We played hard,” Van Horn coach Daniel Bieser said after his team finished 8-15. “It was a tough way to go. Seven of our 10 players return next season.”

ODESSA 56, OAK GROVE 55: The tough Class 4 District 13 loss at Oak Grove ended Oak Grove’s season.

Austin Blackston scored 18 points to guide the Panthers, who trailed 21-18 at halftime.
