  • The city of Independence has officially opened its contest to redesign the city flag.
The city’s beautification commission is sponsoring the contest, with an aim to introduce the new-look pennant on Flag Day, June 14. Citizens are urged to submit their designs for a new flag through the city’s website at www.independencemo.org (designs can also by submitted by mail). Designs must have original artwork and be submitted in color, and all lettering must be clearly legible. A link to the full contest rules and application form is provided on the home page.
Designs must be submitted by April 30.
The current flag is the winning design from a 1969 contest for school children sponsored by the Women Civic Club. It has “Queen City of The Trails” in script, above an image of a wagon wheel, with “INDEPENDENCE” in red block letters at the bottom.
“While it is significant and lovely, we thought after 45 years, maybe it’s time for something, maybe a little jazzier,” commission member Gloria Smith said when she outlined the contest for the City Council during a January study session.
There is no age or residency restriction for the contest. The Independence Beautification Commission will select the winning design and reserves the right to reject any and all entries.
