Blue Springs South junior forward Kevin Puryear was named Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the Suburban Big Six, while Jaguars mentor Jimmy Cain was named Coach of the Year after guiding South to its second league title in a row.
Puryear scored an Examiner-area best 19.3 points per game to lead the Jaguars, who went 9-1 in conference play and 20-5 overall. Two of Puryear’s teammates, senior forward Kendall Blanton and sophomore point guard K.J. Robinson (15.5 ppg) joined him on the all-conference team, as did Blue Springs junior guard Kirk Finley and Lee’s Summit North senior guard Caleb Berry (15.4 ppg).
Rounding out the boys all-conference team was Drew Lock, Blake Spellman and Bruce Bias from Lee’s Summit, which upset South in the district finals; and Liberty’s Kellan Turner and Brandyn Moultrie.
South junior guard Brandon Kilgore and senior forward Jacob Towler made honorable mention, as did Blue Springs seniors Darius Vaughn and Cody Isabel and Lee’s Summit North’s Zach Lamb. Lee’s Summit’s Grant Robbins and Raymore-Peculiar’s Ben Harris rounded out the honorable mention.
Blue Springs South senior guard Remy Davenport (13.3 ppg) and junior forward Cloe’ Lane (14.5 ppg) made the girls all-conference, as did Blue Springs juniors Aliyah Lee (11.4 ppg) and Brianna Tauai, Lee’s Summit North senior forward Imani Johnson (17.6 ppg) and North senior guard Erica Nelson (12.1 ppg).
Liberty’s Morgan Fleming and Taylor Wetzel, Lee’s Summit’s Eriyonna Jones and Ray-Pec’s Meghan Maher rounded out the all-conference team.
The conference's girls coaches did not name a player of the year.
