  • Terry to come from Leavenworth to replace retiring Ogle
    By The Examiner staff
William Chrisman High School has hired a new activities director to replace longtime AD Dan Ogle, who is retiring.
The Independence School District announced Thursday that Shawn Terry will join the William Chrisman staff on July 1 after his hiring was approved by the Independence Board of Education in Tuesday’s meeting.
Terry comes to Chrisman from Leavenworth (Kan.) High School, where he oversaw 25 sports programs and 75 coaches as the athletic director.
Ogle, 56, is retiring at the end of the school year after serving for 31 years in the Independence School District – the first at Bridger Middle School and the remaining 30 at William Chrisman. He served 16 years as activities director after also serving as the baseball head coach, football assistant coach and soccer coach.
Terry said he plans to visit Chrisman regularly in the coming months to work with Ogle on making the transition.
Terry has served as the AD at Leavenworth for the last three years. Under his leadership, the Leavenworth football team ended a 31-year playoff drought with state playoff appearances in two of the last three years.
The Leavenworth girls basketball team bounced back from six straight losing seasons to qualify for the state tournament last year. The boys basketball team placed second in the Kansas state tournament last year and has only one loss this season.
Prior to becoming athletic director, Terry also served as a football coach in the Leavenworth and Harrisonville school districts and coached basketball and track and field at Blue Valley Northwest High School. He was also a student assistant men’s basketball coach at Fort Hays State in Fort Hays, Kan., and served as an athletic trainer for the Kansas State football team.
