A beer made with tequila? Another one made with gooseberries, and yet another made with quinine? Yep, it’s that time of year again – Jack’s Abby Brewing is hosting its second annual Battle of the Barrels.

The brewery split its staff into four teams, with each team getting $100 dollars to buy any ingredient they want and two barrels to age the beers. barrells

On April 2, at 6 p.m., all four of the beers will be tapped, and a panel of judges (myself included) will be there tasting all of the beers and voting for the best of the beers. There will be a food truck outside of the brewery if you’re hungry

Last year’s winner was Dan Eng, owner of Barleycorn’s in Natick, and his Numb Swagger.

The list of this year’s entries look kind of … interesting.

The four beers are: Glazed Over – the Smoked Marzen aged with caramel, salt and fenugreek; Chupaca Brau – the Jabby Brau aged with tequila, Thai chili peppers, galangal root, lemon grass and agave nectar; Green Goose – Sunny Ridge pilsner aged with cucumber, green tea, lemongrass and gooseberries; and Sunny & Tonic – the Sunny Ridge pilsner aged with gin botanicals and quinine.

If you have time, stop in and get a chance to vote for your favorite beer.
