Firefighters contained a grass fire in east Independence on Thursday to about 3 acres.
The fire was intentionally set, and Independence police made two arrests.
It happened in an open area where a nursery once stood next to the McDonald’s on U.S. 24 just east of Missouri 291.
Independence Fire Department Deputy Chief John Greene said firefighters were also called to a second, much smaller fire at the nearby Walgreens and that led police to two people, who admitted setting the fires and who were arrested.
Conditions are extremely dry. The city posted a burn ban earlier this week, and that runs through Monday. Also, officials put up a red flag warning for the metro area and beyond on Thursday because it’s so warm, windy and dry.
“It’s really bad out there,” Green said.
Had the wind shifted, Greene said, officials would have to had to evacuate the nearly Hawthorne Place Apartments.
