Organizers say this year’s Tour of Kansas City will be a bigger event than in the past and bring to the area some new things, with events for weekend riders as well as competitive racers.

The event is set for June 20-22, mostly in the Longview area of Lee’s Summit and the Cliff Drive area of Kansas City.

A highlight this year is a gran fondo, which the Tour of Kansas City describes as “just a step up above your ordinary ride. A challenging ride that combines the best elements of epic recreational rides, scenic touring rides, and road races.”

“ ... we’ve never had a gran fondo in Kansas or western Missouri,” Brent Hugh, executive director of the Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Foundation, told Jackson County legislators on Monday.

That event, on June 21, will be on roads along the old Rock Island railroad line in Cass County and Lee’s Summit. Riders can choose among five distances: 15, 25, 47, 73 or 100 miles.

While the gran fondo is timed and considered somewhat competitive, there also is a Tour of Kansas City Fun Ride on June 22.

Organizers said this should be regional event that even draws some national attention. County legislators voted to give the tour $5,000 to help put on this year’s event.

Through April 30, registration is $45 for the gran fondo, $35 for the fun ride or $70 for both. More information is at
