A man whose body was pulled from Lake Jacomo Tuesday afternoon had been under investigation for child pornography, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jeffrey D. Welch, 40, of Lee’s Summit was found dead after he drove his vehicle into Lake Jacomo just before noon Tuesday near the Lake Jacomo Marina’s north boat dock off West Park Road, just south of Woods Chapel Road. When he was pulled from his car, Welch had what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Ronda Montgomery said.

After the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the body was Welch, the Sheriff’s Office discovered the he was under investigation by the Western Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force for alleged crimes related to child pornography.

Montgomery said that the WMCCTF investigation is now closed because of his death.

Just prior to noon a witness called the Sheriff’s Office after seeing a car drive into the water near the marina’s boat ramp at a high rate of speed. Sheriff’s Office deputies and Lee’s Summit Underwater Recovery responded and search crews pulled Welch’s vehicle from the lake just before 3 p.m.
