    To the editor:
The election next Tuesday could be a time of renewal, much like spring will renew the land. It would be my distinct pleasure to continue my service to the community in yet another way, as a board member of the Independence School District. I ask for your support.
I have lived my entire adult life in Independence having moved to this community in 1980. I met my future wife, Kelly Crumpacker then, and together we raised three daughters, all of whom attended kindergarten through graduation in the Independence district. Sadly, our family lost Kelly to a terrible illness in 2000. I continued to raise my three daughters as a single parent until I met and married Lynda Easley years later. Our blended family now includes a son, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and two grandsons.
In 1986, I formed a small business, R&K Autobody, and today operate a brisk operation (U.S. 24 west of Missouri 291), with that company 27 years later. Before, I managed both Kansas City Hilton Hotels, 45th and Main and at KCI, where I supervised hundreds of employees and was responsible for two multi-million dollar businesses.
Six years ago, I served as one of the initial 3,000 volunteers for the Extreme School Make-Over project at Van Horn High School and have participated in every subsequent Project Shine. I routinely volunteer for the Salvation Army and have served as a volunteer for many local charities. I’m the immediate past president of the Independence Rotary Club that received special distinctions in that year, and am currently an adviser for the Hilltop School Project in Lee’s Summit and for the Career and Technology Center at Fort Osage High School.
In recent years, student test scores in the Independence district have significantly slipped. I would like to offer my management experience and my commitment to our district as a board member, and ask for your support on April 8.
